This publication is a presentation of the results of a two-year international interdisciplinary artistic project aimed at exploring, challenging and reinterpreting the functions of public spaces in cities of transition. Chapter by chapter, you will learn about the different phases of realising this complex artistic endeavour and the resulting final outcomes in the three cities involved in the project.
This brochure is structured to guide you through the process we went through artistically: from ideas and expectations, through research, mentoring and most importantly, the artistic phase leading to the outcomes in the cities of Novi Sad, Skopje and Tirana — the site-specific, immersive performances and the public spatial interventions. You will see that even though we had an initial concept of how we wanted to approach our work and what we intended as a result, the outcomes differ from city to city, on the one hand as a result of the different methods the partner organisations took in conducting the Research Phase, and on the other as the result of our need to artistically interpret the different stories and the specific spatial narratives and atmospheres of these three similar, but essentially very different cities. Some of the main components of the outcomes are repeated, but the results show us the specificities of each location and that, in true artistic fashion, one can try to repeat a methodology to develop an artwork, but at a certain point, it begins to take on a life of its own and finds it’s specific niche within reality.
