ABOUT the PROJECT

The project Public Spaces Re:claimed aims to explore the role of socially engaged art in revitalising the social dimension of public spaces in contemporary European cities. New regulations of private-public relations in transitional societies are reflected in the use of public spaces. Serbian, Macedonian and Albanian cities are particularly affected by this problem.

Starting from Lefebvre’s concept of Right to the City, this project deals with possible ways of revitalising public spaces through art, in Tirana, Novi Sad and Skopje under the mentorship of the Berlin-based Rimini Protokoll. The project addresses the challenge countries in permanent transition are facing, when it comes to shaping and understanding public spaces and our freedom to decide what kind of city we want to live in.

Bringing urban sociology and art together, this project intends to influence the development of new identities of public spaces in contemporary Novi Sad, Skopje and Tirana through socially engaged contemporary art forms and educational multimedia tools.

The primary outcomes of this project are immersive performances that deeply engage audiences in Tirana, Novi Sad, and Skopje. Furthermore, as integral components of the project, a brochure and strategy were created.
